Veteran sports journalist Bryan Burwell arrived in St. Louis in 2002 with a distinguished national reputation, and after only four years in the city, St. Louis Magazinehailed him as the best reporter in the city on its 2006 A List. Whether in print (St. Louis Post-Dispatch) or over the airwaves (ESPN’S The Sports Reporters and Jim Rome is Burning; Fox 2 Sports), the veteran, award-winning sports columnist was hailed for his literate writing style and knowledgeable, outspoken voice. “Burwell … is a man who enjoys playing with words,” said the magazine. “His insight is shrewd, and he dares to write on topics (Mark McGwire’s tainted legacy, the absurdly dysfunctional Mizzou administration) others have been given good cause to avoid. Even better, he tackles once-taboo topics (his “Ebonic twins”/Ricky Clemmons jailhouse-tapes column was a classic) and proves the taboo a sham and the reality worth investigating.”
In his 30-plus year career, Burwell established a national reputation as a columnist/writer for some of the most prestigious newspapers in America, including USA Today, The Sporting News, New York Daily News, Detroit News, New York Newsday, the Washington Star and his current position with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.
In 2007, Burwell was recognized by the Associated Press Sports Editors as one of the nation’s top 10 sports columnists. In 1989, his first year as a full-time columnist, he was honored by the APSE as one of the top five sports columnists in the country (Detroit News), and in 1988 while with the New York Daily News, the APSE honored him with a fifth-place finish in sports feature writing. In 1991 and 1992 became the first back-to-back winner of the National Association of Black Journalists sports writing award. In 1990, United Press International named Burwell the top sports columnist in Michigan. In his 35 years in the business, he’s been honored by The Associated Press, United Press International, the Professional Basketball Writers Association and the Professional Football Writers Association of America.
He is the author of two books, including “The 100 Best St. Louis Sports Arguments.”
On the television side, he spent 14 years with HBO as a feature reporter on INSIDE THE NFL's "Cover Story" segment. He was part of the program's groundbreaking 2002 Sports Emmy® win for "Outstanding Studio Show - Weekly." He also spent four years with the Emmy Award-winning “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel.” His other television credits include: NBA correspondent for Turner Broadcasting and CNN; studio analyst for Fox 2’s Rams Gameday Live, weekly sports commentary for Fox 2; regular panelist on ESPN’s “The Sports Reporters” and “Jim Rome is Burning”; contributor to ESPN’s Sports Century documentary series; voice-over work for the ESPN documentary on the late sports writing legend Ralph Wiley in 2005; Host and writer of the 2007-08 nationally syndicated TV documentary on the Negro Baseball Leagues called “The Color of Change,” which won two 2008 “Telly” Awards.
